Cast announced for BBC’s Lip Service

If you’re as excited as me about Harriet Braun/the Beeb’s upcoming lesbian drama series, then I’m willing to bet my left arm you’ll be somewhat interested in finding out who’s been cast to play the lusty Glaswegian lady-lovers that you’re due to spend much of Spring 2010 unashamedly lusting after.

The good old press folk over at BBC HQ have now provided a comprehensive cast list and a few more sneaking glimpses into the general character set-up, which evidently comprises three gay women, all intrinsically linked via friendship or previous romantic attachment (sound familiar?).

Frankie is “an irreverent and provocative photographer who avoids commitment at all turns”.  Cat is “Frankie’s former lover, who may not be as immune to Frankie’s charms as she professes to be”.  Tess is “Cat’s best friend and flatmate who has an uncanny knack of attracting all the wrong sorts of women”.

Sounds like a regular Saturday night out on the scene then.

Frankie will be played by Ruta Gedmintas (recently seen in The Tudors), Cat by Laura Fraser (who appeared alongside Heath Ledger in 2001’s A Knight’s Tale and, more recently, as lead in the BBC dramatisation of Florence Nightingale) and Tess by Fiona Button (Lucy Bedford in The Palace).  Major supporting roles include Roxanne McKee (the fit one from Hollyoaks), Heather Peace (the remarkably gay-seeming one, as I remember, from London’s Burning) and Tom Mannion as Frankie’s Uncle Cameron (Taggart, The Bill).

Writer and creator Harriet Braun says, “All of these characters are very close to my heart, so to have found such a great cast who bring them to life so fantastically is very exciting.” Executive Producer for Kudos, Derek Wax agreed, “I am thrilled we have secured such a strong and exciting cast for Lip Service…” adding, “Kudos is very proud to be making this new series with [Harriet] for BBC Three”.  Finally, Head of Drama for BBC Scotland Anne Mensah offered, “The quality of the cast that the scripts have brought to the table really speaks for itself and Lip Service promises to be an emotionally-charged and utterly enjoyable drama series.”

Hear hear.  Roll on Spring…
