Tuesday Top Ten… action movie vixens.

So. We were watching The Fifth Element the other day, and it got us thinking (as you do). These weren’t deep and meaningful talks or anything, not really. But we love a good action film. All too often the good ones tend to be made for the boys, and let’s be frank, sometimes the boys hog all the glory, leaving little room for anything else (except massive explosions and too-loud crashes).

But when an action film has a hot woman lead and a well-thought out plot, well then, there is little better in our book. Regardez, s’il vous plait, our list of the top ten most awesome women in action films. Essential reading for your Tuesday afternoon.

1. Alice (Milla Jovovich) Resident Evil

Seriously – can anything actually compare to Ms. Jovovich? This woman is amazing. And I can watch Resident Evil again and again and again, owing mainly to her absolute and indisputable ability to kick. ass.

2. Tank Girl (Lori Petty) Tank Girl

So she gets with a *SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER* kangaroo in the end – who cares? Pretending to be Naomi Watts’ girlfriend makes everything worth it in my opinion. Well. That and the amazing hair, boots, and general ballsiness.

3. Æon Flux, Æon Flux

No, not that bizarre film with Charlize Theron (though she is most definitely yum). When I was younger (seriously, probably far too young to have been watching this show) there were much lesser restrictions on what they would show on MTV India – and one of the results of that (and the fact we had no Cartoon Network) was my discovery of this show. Æon Flux was tall, gorgeous and generally clad in various bits of scanty bondage gear. She was also a formidable, and incredibly dreamy, spy.

4. Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) The Matrix

Oh Trinity. You had me the second you jumped up into the air and sent every agent in that room flying to the outer corners with those neat flicks of your lovely, leather-clad legs.

5. Aunty Entity (Tina Turner) Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome

That snarl. Those legs. That hair. Those bloody brilliant shoulder pads. Oh Ms. Entity. You really were just it.

6. The Bride (Uma Thurman) Kill Bill

I tell you one thing – I wish I was the kind of person that could get up after a ten year coma, serve sweet vengeance to the man who raped me as I lay unconcscious, drag myself to his car and then proceed to get payback for every former friend that wronged me. And look as bloody good in a yellow tracksuit.

7. Kaurwaki (Kareena Kapoor) Asoka

So this is probably an obscure one for most people, but, swear to God, we love everything about this film. Especially the facts that Kaurwaki is an expert in Indian martial arts and a master of sword-fighting as well her little brother’s guardian. Then, later, right, she leads an entire army against the Indian emperor (whom, fine, she later marries, whatever). I love this woman.

8. May Day (Grace Jones) A View To A Kill

If you even need to ask why Grace Jones is on this list, we have nothing to talk about. Good day.

9.  Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) Alien

An alien bursts out of the chest of a fellow crew member, grows monstrously fucking huge and kills everyone on the ship one by one – except, of course, Ripley. Why? Because she’s awesome, beyond all measure. It doesn’t hurt that she’s inimitably hot, slightly butch and really, seriously smart. The perfect woman (NB. the cat also survived).

10. Shu-lien (Michelle Yeoh) Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

An independent, fearsome warrior who is tremendously skilled, defies gender stereotypes and is yet loving, honourable and merciful? Bonus points because it’s (Dato’) Michelle Yeoh.
