Tuesday Top Ten… Lady Sports Movies

Uniforms. Jocks. Screaming and shouting. Team spirit, fields, running and jumping and scoring – oh my! There’s a lot to be said for a good round of sport – whether you’re participating or watching. There’s also a lot to be said about the movies that depict these sports – there’s nothing like the sight of a lady in uniform ready to tackle you to the ground to encourage you to pick up a racket or a hockey stick.

Now, I get told that I’m too wordy quite a lot of the time. So for today’s Tuesday Top Ten, I will attempt to explain my reasoning for each inclusion on this list in five words or less. In no particular order….

1. Stick It

It’s not called gym-nice-tics.

2. Bring It On

Eliza Dushku. Spirit Fingers.

3. A League of Their Own

Madonna. Lori Petty. Play ball.

4. Girlfight

She gets a boyfriend? Whatever.

5. Bend It Like Beckham

She’s not Lebanese! She’s Indian!

6. Love and Basketball

I’d rather wear a jersey than an apron.

7. Chak De! India

Leastwise we win in movies.

8. Blue Crush

My, that’s a fine… board.

9. Million Dollar Baby

Girly, tough ain’t enough.

10. The Iron Ladies

Just really. Freaking. Awesome.

I know number 6 is cheating, but it’s such a great line (from the movie. Obv.)

What’s your favourite sports movie?

Did you know that originally Bend it like Beckham was meant to have a lesbian story line. But they thought it would alienate audiences so they changed it. I’ve been looking every where for the original manuscript for it but so far no luck =/

But other than that, awesome list! Some right classics on there!

  2. black forest says:

Bring it on rocks…spirit fingers haha..I thought Gabrielle Union was fab..The film is progressive in the sense it represents an ethnic cheerleading group too!

  3. dundee cake says:

seriously- how can you have left ‘she’s the man’ off that list of awesomeness? yeah the trailer is rubbish, but the film’s fantastic!

  4. Alpha Betty says:

How could you not include Personal Best, the definitive lesbian sports film:)

    nice post. thanks.

Good list, but I agree that “She’s the man” should have been on there. That’s a funny film.

Black Forest- Is “Bring it on” really that progressive?! The film was made in the naughty naughties and in America black people aren’t really an ethnic minority compared to the likes of Asians, American Indians etc. In fact, statistically people that consider themselves black in America make up the third largest group of ethnicities!

I’d agree with your comment if the film was made in say the 60′s or 70′s. But I disagree it’s progressive for the 2000′s!

Huh – I’ve never actually seen ‘She’s The Man’, hence it’s (inadvertent) exclusion. Though – doesn’t that have Amanda Bynes in it? I can’t stand her, she really grates on me… I did check out the trailer though, and it looks funny.

  8. custard says:

Yeh that’s right Devil’s Food Cake. Why does she annoy you so much? To be honest that’s the only film I think I’ve see her in. I think she plays the role pretty well. It’s a funny film but the girly fight in the toilets towards the end has to be one of the funniest girl fights I think I’ve ever seen. It’s hysterical!

  9. CherryBakewell says:

Whip It! should definitely be added to this list. Your new favourite film.

Drew, Ellen and Juliette Lewis on skates and kicking the crap out of each other. Almost as exciting as watching real life roller girls…

  10. Devils Food Cake says:

Ah, I think it’s because I used to watch a lot of nickelodeon as kid, and she was on this show called ‘All That’. I guess I just feel like she doesn’t have much range as an actress – I think there’s too much reliance on the fact that she has this really distinctive slapstick voice (which she used a lot on both ‘All That’ and the sketch show she did herself ). Like instead of being subtly funny, a lot of the humour is based on over-reacting to a situation? It just… grates on me. I’m fussy though, I know this….
