GLYPH is a Berlin-based fashion label, founded by the amazing Lisa Steegmann. Having designed their stage outfits, Lisa’s recently been touring around Europe with lez hip-hop artists Scream Club (interview with them coming soon). Lemon Tart caught up with Lisa post-gig…

What inspires your designs for GLYPH?

I get inspired by nature a lot, being outside… going to the forest or the sea always brings me good ideas.

How did you start GLYPH?

Having studied Fashion Design, I kept on working with my final project: GLYPH.
To graduate, I had to build an entire label: from clothes hangers to price tags – even a business plan. So I was well prepared and basically just had to keep on working on it.

Whereabouts in Berlin are you based?

GLYPH is based in Kreuzberg, Berlin at the moment, but I am about to open a new shop in Neukölln in the next month.

You’ve collaborated with both Scream Club and Planningtorock, for example. Does music inspire your designs a lot?

Music totally has a big influence on me: I listen to a lot of music, and I have a lot of friends that are musicians.
I love working with performers, I like the part of working together and combining lots of ideas into one project.
Any performer I work with usually already has her own idea of what’s going on, and I like the process of collecting ideas and getting inspiration from each other: I like the exchange. I enjoy it when things have a bigger vision behind it and a great concept.

What are your plans for the future with GLYPH?

One exciting thing will be the shop opening next month.
Also, I am working on a whole new design project together with Janine from Planningtorock, plus I will continue working with Scream Club.
…and i have a lot of artists that I love and want to make stage performance outfits for, for example Planningtorock, The Knife, Fever Ray, SIA, Robots in Disguise…

Which other fashion designers do you admire?

I love the work of Andrea Ayala and Isabelle Steeger.
