Style Lust: Tilda Swinton

What did you do last weekend? On a cross-London sojourn with my girlfriend, I saw lots of things that made me happy – fountains, sunshine, Tilda Swinton…. If your heart didn’t stop when you read that last one, I’d be surprised.

The venerable Ms. Swinton is surely some kind of force of nature. Not only is she an incredible actor (who didn’t love Orlando? Or Michael Clayton? Or even – admit it – Narnia?) she has set herself apart from the rest of us mere mortals with her enviable smarts, the impressive range of her work, and last – but not least – her sartorial elegance. While you may not always like what she wears, you have to admit that you notice it. And you have to admit that there’s not a single other person, male or female, who can pull off the things she does – and certainly not with the same panache.

Anyway, walking down Old Bond Street, I was delighted and most excited to see that the new face of Pringle of Scotland is none other than Tilda herself. As you’d expect, she looks amazing – I’m not sure how she combines androgynous perfection with that cool, clean air I once thought only Gatsby was capable of. But she does, and she does it very, very well.

This isn’t the first time Tilda’s been the face of a major sartorial movement. Who can forget her riveting turn in that iconic anOther magazine shoot?

Back to the Pringle campaign: given Pringle’s deeply Scottish roots, I don’t think they could have made a better choice for this campaign. Tilda Swinton is swish and lovely and just very, very attractive. Add that to the fact that she’s profoundly talented, practically a Scottish institution and just all-round an excellent role model (apart from her support for Roman Polanski), I’d call this a flat-out coup. Pringle itself has said that Ms. Swinton embodies the mood of the collection, the ‘elusive, luminous quality’ of which they say is epitomized by her strength and confidence. The collection itself is pretty gorgeous – my favourites are the crochet dresses and the lovely stone/yellow knit dress below.

And finally, on top of the already generous portion of Tilda we got from the print campaign, there’s a pretty lush video to boot by Ryan McGinley.

Too too too too thin. I just think she looks awful in everything. Sorry guys…

  2. custard says:

Have to agree with Fairy Cake. I really don’t see the attraction at all.

Sometimes I really wonder whether gay people just automatically find a famous person attractive just because they’re gay. I wonder whether Tilda would still be found to be as attractive if she was straight…

  3. petit fours says:

the red carpet sort of clashes with her hair, but she looks stunning in those another magazine shoots. wow. her arms and hips all look really sexy, in my book

  4. devils food cake says:

    um, tilda IS straight.

@ petit fours – you should see what she looks like in a tux. drool.

  5. Black Forest says:

I’d definately find her attractive, even if she was straight. I don’t particularly associate her with being gay anyway? and I believe she has a husband and a lover…she’s just not conventional gay or straight and I like that. BTW her Viktor and Rolf shoot was pretty amazing back in the days too!

  6. petit fours says:

well fair enough fairy and custard – she is a skinny little bug-eyed creature and sometimes that look better than others. but it sorta works for me

  7. Devils Food Cake says:

    she’s not BUG-EYED!

  8. petit fours says:

    buggy buggy!! :)
    but like cute bug eyes

  9. Schwarz says:

Swinton’s just another over-rated posh woman people feel compelled to call “magnificent” because, as per Stephen Fry, they find themselves automatically cap-doffing in the presence of her accent and her class.

She’s not gay, she’s not queer, and she’s a supporter of fugitive rapist, Roman Polanski.

If we’re going to worship straight women, how about Rosario Dawson – gorgeous, generous & a staunch supporter of gay & women’s rights.

  10. custard says:

lol petit fours! If that’s what floats your boat!

  11. foxtrot says:

You’re right Schwarz, I just wikipedia’d her and I had no idea how posh her family is. She was in the same school class as Princess Di! And yeah, the Polanski-supporting = vomit.

Orlando is still worth a watch though.

  12. rosie says:

    SWINTON!
I don’t fancy her, but she is FIEEEERRRCCE.

  13. Dundee Cake says:

Crikey guys- I thought you lot generally called yourselves liberals? If someone came on here and said ‘I did like someone, but then I noticed she went to some godawful comp in Tower Hamlets, and she shared a class with about half of Wormwood Scrubs….’ I can’t imagine you’d give them a great reception. Just because *her parents* decided to send her to one school and not another, is that really a reason to like her any more or less? Jeez…
(And I think she looks funny. Not in an especially attractive way, but different- I’ll give you that DFC.)

  14. Devil's Food Cake says:

I agree with you entirely Dundee Cake – I’m not sure why someone being posh (or not gay, or not queer) makes them a bad person, or someone undeserving of positive attention. I completely agree that her support of Roman Polanski is entirely reprehensible, and for that, the dislike is fair. But because she’s posh? Because she’s got a particular accent? Because she went to school with Lady Diana? Are those really qualities we judge people for?

Contrary to what Schwarz has put forward, I don’t feel compeleld to call anyone magnificent for their accent or where they come from. I actually think Tilda Swinton is a fantastic actress. Orlando, Narnia and Michael Clayton aside, she’s been fantastic in almost everything she’s been in – I could make a list if you really wanted. But it’s presumptious and really prejudiced for someone to start slinging mud based on someone’s class.

    Genial post
