Brody Distilled
By MoonCake
So I decided to investigate what had happened to Brody Dalle, of ‘The Distillers’ fame and one of the idols of my misspent youth. It could have been that distinctive, gravelly tone of her voice, girl-on-guitar and the punk rock-chick attitude but I think it was the lip ring that sold me. I guess I had a soft spot for the dark eyed, brooding, arrogant-on-the-outside kind of girl. Maybe I still do.

Anyway, back to the present and she, like all of us, has had to grow up. She’s been married, divorced, married again (surname changed to Dalle-Homme) and now has a 3 year old kid. Not that I’m saying having a 3 year old is growing up; there are some parents who have never heard of that particular concept. But matured she definitely has, since even she’s admitted she can’t carry on the typical rock star lifestyle anymore and has to adjust accordingly.
But she’s back in the music. The Distillers have been split for a few years but Brody now fronts Spinnerette, which she claims isn’t a band, ‘it’s me and whichever musicians I want to work with at the time’, which is fair enough as she writes all the songs. The debut album was released last month and I’ve been checking it out on Spotify. From what I’ve heard, it sounds altogether less screamy than her Distiller days, although there is still that rock edge to it. But it sounds like there’s definitely some experimentation going on as there’s some songs on this album that hardcore Distiller fans may turn their proverbial noses up at. To me, it seems that there’s a slightly slower pace to the album and more emphasis placed on the tune of her vocals rather than just having a screaming match with the other instruments. Check it out for yourself on Spotify, download it or *gasp* buy it.
I like the new incarnation of Brody Dalle in Spinnerette. She, herself, acknowledged that the industry was changing and they couldn’t remain in the status quo forever. She also scored brownie points in my book for rooting for Ladyhawke at the NME awards earlier this year. I wonder what Brody would sound like on a Ladyhawke track. Hmm.

I love love love love love Brodie Dalle. I have this massive crush on her, and like – have you seen the video for Drain The Blood? Nobody could look as good as she does in those pants.
wow. i just have watched the drain the blood video. That was a brilliant 3 minutes 14 seconds. thank you both for making me realise who she is. can we bring the whole goth look back…? i really miss it.
Oh she was so hot back then. I’m not sure if i fancy her now but her voice still makes me…. mm :D
I saw Spinnerette at Reading this year. They are awesome, she is awesome. I fell instantaneoulsy in love and then stared at her for an hour while she did signing in the NME tent until my friend Brian flashed her tits at her and we had to leave.
It was a wonderful moment.
