Gingers that go hard : Kitty Pryde
by Fairy Cake
I am not entirely sure right now whether Kitty Pryde, flame-haired rapper of an undisclosed age from Daytona Beach, is actually real or just a figment of my sex-starved imagination.
This girl seems to be a suspicious amalgamation of all the things I lust over – gingers, MCs, lip tattoos, nerds, freckles. Perhaps this is God’s way of telling me to move to Florida…

Kitty’s background is kind of a mystery. Since her early teens she’s been posting these lazy overdubs of commercial rap tunes on YouTube. The tracks got a lot of Likes. The more people got interested, the more serious she became about it – though not serious enough to charge for her music (most of the material she posts online is accompanied with a Mediafire link and an apology for having run out of free downloads on Bandcamp). Anyway – some time later, and she’s being interviewed by Vice and playing shows all over Europe.
The current culture of lyric-lacking but cute white girls ‘rapping’ over stuff that sounds a bit like Major Lazer has had me banging my head on every available surface, but as with all fad genres, you get the occasional diamond in the rough. Kitty’s most recent stuff is very much worth your buck, even if she doesn’t think so. The ‘Haha I’m Sorry’ EP, which came out back in June, features some Clams Casino-esque production and a host of juicy little rhyming couplets, all delivered like it’s no big deal. E.g :
You could be much creepier
I’m pleased with your cheesy words
And your thoughts regarding my cheeks creasing
Even though I’m greaser than pizza
More tweezers, I mean Jesus
My teeth just need bleaching
I agree with you
School’s a breeze so I’ll leave with you
Bird and bees are a mystery
Teach me?
With books thicker than Hemingway
Descriptive and anyway
Kids hate on this but I don’t care what the Lemmings say.
In her own words, “harder than Gucci Gucci, Louis Louis, Fendi Fendi, Prada”.
This is very much the DIY, confessional, rough-around-the-edges side of hip hop – a thankful far cry from the conspicuously offensive content and, IMHO, hugely overrated noise of OFWGKA. If Why? with tits sounds like your jam, listen to the below.
Speaking of Why?, Ms Pryde recorded a cover of Yoni Wolf’s ‘Good Friday’ over a gangster beat on her Lizzie McGuire Experience EP… appropriately renamed Hood Friday. It is pretty badass. Give Me Scabies is also great (warning – samples Carly Rae Jensen, and is actually enjoyable).
If that little lot leaves you cold, well, then the only thing left is to show you another picture of her lovely face and hope that this hasn’t been a total waste of your time.
