Friday Fancy : Unicorn Kid

The Friday feeling I have today evades traditional emotive description. I fear the only way I could possibly begin to illustrate to anyone the sense of crushing entrapment impounding me, would be to lock them in a small cage, and repeatedly bang on the steel exterior while yelling “EVERYONE ELSE IS HAVING FUN AND YOU ARE GOING TO DIE SAD AND ALONE”.

But how to counter such impending doom? Find a song so rapturous that it unapologetically shits on that Friday feeling from a great height.

At just 18 years old, wee Scot Unicorn Kid is signed to Ministry of Sound, has remixed the Pet Shop Boys and toured with Calvin Harris. And all these facts would probably hurl me further into my well of self pity, if his music wasn’t so blindingly awesome. Mr Kid is affiliated with a movement called ‘chip’, which attempts to incorporate the sort of low-res glitches and bleeps you used to get on old school Gameboys into something coherent and danceable.

But you don’t need to know that. What you need do, is break out of your steel cage of despair, turn this shit up, and rave like that guy at G-A-Y whose had too many poppers. EPIC.  TUNE.

I managed to catch half of Unicorn Kid’s set at Truck Festival this July, and it still remains one of the most joyous musical experiences of my life.  He’s playing Bestival this year, so if you’re lucky enough to have tickets, I thoroughly recommend you check him out.
