Music Video Monday… Joe Worricker
by Fairy Cake
“New soul”, is not, traditionally, a genre I would choose to associate with. My music collection has about as much soul as the 2004 remake of Dawn Of The Dead. The only thing that Amy Winehouse inspires in me is the irrepressible urge to burn things.
That is, until about two months ago, when, through an everyday work-related bump, I happened upon one Joe Worricker. If he wasn’t currently running around the world promoting his debut album, I would employ this man full time to sing me to sleep. With the cuteness of a thousand LOLcatz, he seems to have fashioned a brand of pop music that is simultaneously original, danceable, and inclined to make its listeners grin like idiots at people on public transport. This is no mean feat.
What’s more, in the wonderfully heteronormative world of pop music, Joe is penning songs about boys. A true gayer. And not just in spirit (I’m looking at you Gaga); he actually uses gendered pronouns and everything!
“Yes”, I hear you moan at your monitor, “that’s all great, but this is Music Video Monday. We need our weekly dose of pop promo perfection. No one watches MTV any more… you know that.”
Indeed I do. And luckily, the boy’s got two. This one, which features a big gay disco party, a mirrorball, and a woman who looks like a drunk Britney impersonator…
…and this one, to accompany his single, ‘We Hug In Bed’. There’s a bit where his eyes turn into liquorish All-Sorts. Winner.
If you’re into it, Mr Worricker will be politely pummeling audiences with That Voice at The Big Chill and Bestival, both of which are going to be super-ace. In fact, the latter has a stroke-inducing line-up, including Hot Chip, The Prodigy, Ellie Golding, The xx, Jonsi, Flying Lotus, NYPC, Crystal Fighters, Errors, Darwin Deez, Four Tet, Fever Ray, Dave Clarke, Three Trapped Tigers and everyone’s favourite chiptune champion, Unicorn Kid. Natch, it’s sold out. Here’s hoping you got a ticket.

buut… you don’t like amy winehouse? how!?
Worricker is my new favourite artist.
