Music Video Monday : Speech Debelle

While we were watching Rihanna faux-frigging herself in her latest promo, Speech Debelle quietly crept in and stole ALL THE TALENT.
I love this girl. Not just because I pretty much love anything that combines hip hop beats and intelligent discourse, but because female mcs get me right here *points at chest* (that’s why there are a bunch of them, including Ms Debelle, in my last podcast). Her new record ‘Freedom of Speech’ is out next month. This track, Studio Backpack Rap, is the first cut from it.
Lesbians get a name check , and there’s also a break that you can air-drum along to which is always fun in a slightly anti-social way. Thumbs up for a hip hop artist making actual hip hop.
Also, did you see that track she did way back with bonafide lez Micachu? Relevant.

I especially liked the point you made about being too fixated with Rihanna to pay attention to alternative (can’t quite bring myself to say superior) talents. I too suffer from Rihannaism and this article reminded me that a world does exist outside of het dominion…thanx!
