Baby P’s mother’s a lesbian – AND?

I guess it’s pretty common knowledge that this week they released the names of the Baby P criminals. But then yesterday I see this article (from the Sun and arguably I should know what to expect) with the headline ‘Baby P mum is a lesbian’. My first thought was, ‘so what’? Reading on, I realised that these writers really had no point to their ‘exclusive’ fact that was the headline of their story.
It may have been all right if they’d just mentioned it and be done with it. Great, we know now, move on. But it just felt like these guys wanted to draw it out and sensationalise an unsensational detail. In fact, they seem to saddle her being a lesbian (apparently having relations with other female prisoners and flings at raves) with all the other rotten things she’s done. Bits of her lesbian tendencies are inserted in between her terrible crimes of abuse, being a greedy cow and the fact that she never washed.
Maybe it’s just me, but I took offence that apparently her being a bit queer was cause for an uproar. What are they trying to say? Why on earth should it matter? It’s not like it’s the first we’ve heard of a lesbian relationship in prison – Holloway is a women’s only jail. Frankly, she definitely has problems but being a lesbian or just having a lesbian fling would not be one of them!
I’m disgusted that the headline has no real newsworthiness apart from the fact that it further marginalises the lesbian community in a trashy and petty manner – what else to expect from the sun! They seem to be rather amused by lesbianism, first Danii Minogue now this ! – the Sun needs to grow up !
To be fair, it is The Sun. That rag will print anything to get a reader and to hell with journalistic integrity.
