Pro-choice protest: Marie Stopes clinic, 30/10/2010
If you have a bit of time tomorrow, and believe in individual bodily autonomy, keep yourself free between 2 and 4 pm.
Abortion rights have – thankfully – been left relatively unharmed and off the radar of British crazies, but recently, a group called 40 Days for Life have been leading vigils at various abortion clinics around the London. The group, which hails from Texas, has been targeting women who come to the clinics, whether or not these women are entering in order to get an abortion or information pertaining to an abortion.
The group claims to be simply providing women with support and information about alternatives to abortion. But pro-choice campaigners note that the effect of anti-choice groups at clinic doorways can be incredibly distressing to women approaching the clinic for advice or support that they actually want. Having a group of people waving crosses and chanting prayers at you is in no way fun, and given the point to which many of these American-style anti-abortion movements escalate, it comes as no surprise that pro-life, pro-autonomy activists are organizing a peaceful counter-protest. To illustrate the point, the anti-choice movement in America is responsible for some heinous things, including the assassination of Dr. George Tiller. That’s right – aborting a foetus = wrong. Murdering a respected physician and family man = right thing to do. Below is a short video on the group:
Police permission for the protest is based on the stipulation that the rally is kept small and peaceful, so the venue will not be published in this article.
