The gay’s the thing.

There are a lot of things that make me angry. Cars that speed up when they see pedestrians, for example. Children who scream at their parents. Idiot spiritual leaders that like to blame highly controversial and illegal activity on homosexuals as opposed to deep-rooted issues within their religious movement.

What’s that last one you say? Well in case you hadn’t heard, sweethearts, the Holy See have issued a very interesting statement regarding that little controversy they’ve been forced to deal with over the past couple of years. What controversy you ask? Oh birdies, you know – that thing you may have heard about the Catholic priests molesting hundreds of young children – that one.

Now in case you were puzzling your pretty little heads over this one, the Vatican have very helpfully sought to clear things up for us. See, it’s not that there are older priests attacking and abusing young, vulnerable children that’s the problem. How silly of you to have assumed so! It is, in fact, that this abuse is of a homosexual nature that’s the real issue. Be sure that if those boys had been of age, it still would have been deadly wrong – because the problem is not the abuse of children, it’s the homosexual scourge that is out to get us all.

The remarks, read out by the permanent observer from the Vatican to the UN, also cover a range of other excuses for this repulsive behaviour – that it happens in other religions more often, that it was actually Protestant churches where the abuse happened, yadda yadda yadda. But the point here, the point that we really need to take to heart, is that an entire group of people is trying to use it’s influence to blame this horrendous trend on gay people, who are obviously the downfall of civilization.

I can try to use humour or sarcasm to diffuse how upsetting I find all this – I could do it for ages. But the remarks by the Vatican, which clearly illustrate it’s position on the horrifying sexual abuse that has been a part of its modus operandi for so long, are shocking and deeply disappointing. In a world where everything has to evolve, even religion, it is upsetting to see that the figureheads of a major religious organization choose to scapegoat an innocent group of people and refuse to take responsibility for their actions. Not only is the Catholic Church promoting an agenda of homophobic attitudes, they are causing immense pain to the victims of the abuse that they failed to prevent and that they continue to fail to take responsibility for.

There is only one thing you can think: surely the Vatican’s only comment on what happened should be a repeated apology and offers of compensation. This is so low it’s Medieval.
