The Week In Gay: Drag Dads are fabulous, California bans gay cures and casual homophobia gets counted
The Most Cake’s weekly round-up of lesbian-ish/gay lady/queer grrrl news from around the world.
AND WE’RE BACK. Let’s get stuck in shall we?
£40 MILLION OR BUST
Hong Kong-based property tycoon Cecil Chao has offered a £40-million dowry to any man willing (able?) to marry his daughter Gigi, a lesbian who had her relationship with her long-time partner blessed in France earlier this year. I can think of several better things that £40 million could go towards – and I’ll tell you what they are for a fraction of that amount.
Oh Rupert
Rupert Everett is on the blacklist of angry gays everywhere after saying he “couldn’t imagine anything worse” than two gay dads. Oh, Rupert, really? Have you watched the news lately? Syria? Mitt Romney? Anyway, his blank stupidity has apparently earned him a couple of death threats, and though I’m sure he’s unlikely to die as a result of the threats, it’s pretty lame that anyone has the energy to send Rupert Everett a death threat for being a moron. Side-note: REALLY RUPERT REALLY.
The small things that count
The Christian Institute in the UK is questioning whether marriage rights should be extended to LGBT people, saying that the LGBT population is so small, they don’t warrant the ‘monumental change’. Based on a survey carried out by the Office of National Statistics in 2010, only around 1.5% of the population in the UK identifies as LGB, but the report was considered widely flawed, and Stonewall still puts the estimate at around 6%. You guys, I don’t know, based on the survey I carried out on Saturday night, 100% of the female population is gay and at least 5% of men are lesbians – I’d say that definitely warrants a change.
California Beaming!
California’s become the first state in the US to ban therapies that “cure” homosexuality. Governor Jerry Brown (anyone want to guess what party he’s from?) signed the bill banning conversion therapy into law on Saturday. Yay California!
Drag Daddies
The Advocate has a great article up about Drag Dad, a documentary about professional drag queen and RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 2 winner James William Ross IV (aka Tyra Sanchez) and his son. The trailer itself is kind of enough to make me well up, so I can’t imagine all the happytears I’m gonna cry watching this thing.
SERIOUSLY what is it about gay families you guys, they are just way cuter than everyone else.
RACHEL MADDOW IS REALLY HOT
A picture of a younger Rachel Maddow is news right? Right?
Right. The image forms part of the Del LaGrace Volcano retrospective and is on view at the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art in New York.
#nohomophobes
How many time have you noticed casual homophobia slung around like it’s no big deal? The Institute of Sexual Minority Services and Studies at the University of Alberta has put up this great site that gathers data from Twitter about instances of casually homophobic language. The site counts the number of tweets that use the words “faggot”, “no homo”, “so gay” and “dyke”, and flashes up real-time examples from people’s Twitter streams, which is really, really cool (in the “wow, I had no idea” sort of way), but also seriously nauseating after about 30 seconds.
