The Week in Gay News: why Ellen is our Shining Beacon of Hope, why most of the gays on TV are vampires & my how we love Beth Ditto

by Cupcake

The Most Cake’s weekly round-up of lesbian-ish/gay lady/queer grrrl news from around the world…

You gotta give ‘em hope:

Oh boy. Anticipating writing this part of the column has been getting me down all week, ladies. The month of September has seen an abnormally high number of teenage suicides linked to anti-gay bullying and harassment in the United States, and this week was particularly heavy, and it’s really sad. Obviously, media coverage and public debate on the matter have been widespread. Ellen will give you the facts and simultaneously manage to say all the right things, like your best friend:

Now go upload a video to the It Gets Better Project. Save a life, lezzers.

We’re here, we’re queer, but we’re rarely portrayed accurately on television:

The BBC did a study on how LGBT people are represented on television, and surprise! Stereotypes abound and people have noticed! All the lesbians on TV are either presented as being stereotypically “butch” and not having ANY lesbian sex, or as “lipstick lesbians”. Where are all the hawt androgynous dykey girls with tattoos and fierce kicks, I wanna know! Meanwhile, Queerty is more interested in why 20% of straight Brits think there’s too much Gay on TV. And in the US, GLAAD did a similar survey and discovered that while there are more LGBT characters this year than last, most of them are men and virtually none of them are of colour. Furthermore, six out of eight not-straight woman characters are bisexual, and like half of them never date chicks, anyway. Also, Glee and True Blood are the gayest shows on TV!

Told ya we were AMAZING parents:

It’s pretty much official, y’all, lesbians make outstanding parents, even better than that magical mother-and-father team anti-gay bigots keep raving on and on about. It seems to be down to an unusually high amount of involvement and interest in a child’s life. At any rate, win!

Peter Tatchell got himself a blue plaque:

Turns out he lives right around the corner from me!

This is just too absurd srsly:

Assistant Attorney General Andrew Shirvell of Michigan has taken it upon himself to expose the newly elected, openly gay president of Uni Michigan’s student council, Chris Armstrong, as a radical activist with an agenda, and the agenda is that homosexual one. For this purpose, he has started a blog dedicated solely to tracking Armstrong’s every move. A student council president, you guys. This is a kid who was elected on promises of longer cafeteria hours and trans-friendly housing, and now Shirvell, a fully-grown adult, is all up on the interwebs making highly plausible accusations as to the student’s “sexual escapades at churches” and “being Satan’s representative on the student council” (lol really, if I may). Everyone seems in on the joke (Andrew Shirvell is a big, closeted homo) except Shirvell himself. Watch this video of CNN’s Anderson Cooper trying to point out the obvious. “It appears that you’re obsessed with this young, gay man. You’re, like, perusing his Facebook…” Armstrong is apparently taking legal action.

Still consulting on equality brb:

Stonewall is behaving seriously behind the times, making fiscal arguments against marriage equality and waiting for “consultation” to end on the issue of indiscriminate marriages and civil partnerships, a policy which, by the way, the Lib Dems and Labour already fully advocate. What is up with that? Why are they coming up with a price for equal rights like the Treasury should? Are they a charity? Who runs this thing? Gay people?

We’ll always have Twat Boutique:

TMC’s BFF Beth Ditto walked the runway at Paris Fashion Week and sang, too.

Michigan is getting some bad press:

In Michigan, a 17-year-old FTM boy named Oak was elected homecoming king, but the powers that be (mean and bureaucratic school administrators) have stripped him of the title because he’s still registered with his high school as female. Whatevs, Oak ain’t gonna let them bring him down, he says he’s running for prom king now. (None of the articles I read explained why American high schools need to have two major dances incl. student royalty, so my assumption is it’s for occasions like this.)

Haters wanna hate:

Angelina Jolie’s daughter is rockin’ some serious tomboy style, and people are so so upset about it. WTF.

Last week was Banned Books Week! Go read a once-banned lesbian book to celebrate. Some suggestions: The Color Purple, Heather Has Two Mommies, and The Whole Lesbian Sex Book
