The Week in Gay: the highlights of IVF, the Real L Word continues, and why you should come out to someone, now

The Most Cake’s weekly round-up of lesbian-ish/gay lady/queer grrrl news from around the world…

Assault at Stonewall Inn:

On Wednesday, a couple of guys sauntered into Stonewall Inn, apparently missing all the rainbow paraphernalia and men kissing inside and out, made it into the bathroom, and proceeded to beat up a patron after asking him what kind of bar it was. What kind of bar?! A holy sacred historic bar for all gays, that’s what. Still no news on whether the assailants will be charged with a hate crime.

This week in unfairness:

A Hong Kong woman with a transsexual history has been denied the right to marry her boyfriend. Same-sex marriage is illegal in the territory, and the woman’s birth certificate still identifies her as male, even though all her other documents were changed years ago.

100 injured, 100 arrested at Serbian Pride:

Most of those injured are police, and the arrested are all phobes, apparently. 1000 LGBT activists assembled in Belgrade for the first Pride parade since 2001, and anti-gay protesters were so keen to disrupt the party that the gays had to be surrounded by armoured vehicles and police the whole time.

Lesbian couple commits suicide in US:

Jeanine, 21, and Chantal, 17, met in group therapy in February. Last month, Jeanine checked herself into hospital, but was released a week later with a prescription. Jeanine and Chantal later committed suicide in a clearing in the woods after calling their friends and family to say goodbye.

Those Canadians have really good manners, too, let’s move there:

Exodus International’s charity status is being challenged in Canada, just like it was in New Zealand. Since Gay is not a mental disorder, ex-gay groups don’t do any good, and might even do harm, since that ex-gay therapy they provide is not healthy.

He’s a cutie:

Remember last week, we spoke about Chris Armstrong, the UMichigan student body president who has been facing taunts and harassment from the state’s Assistant Attorney General (!)? Well, he’s out and talking to the media now, because of all the LGBT teen suicides last month. You can watch him being interviewed by Anderson Cooper here, he says “like”, like, a lot.

An Aussie lezzie couple is having quintuplets:

Ah, IVF. Always good for a surprise. That’s FIVE babies! It’s pretty adorbs, you guys.

Dun-dun-duuunnnnn:

The Real L Word has been picked up for a second season. Ilene Chaiken is well chuffed, Autostraddle is scared. However, this does give the latter more fodder for their beautiful, extremely well-cast, ground-breaking parodies, which you should watch if you haven’t yet, here:

In related, all-white, all-skinny news, Lip Service starts tonight!

‘You are a male and males can run for king, not queen’:

A MTF teen in Dallas, TX, ran for homecoming queen (it’s obviously the season for these kinds of parties in the States), but her school’s principal took the time to sit her down and explain that the heteronormative gender binary is so coercive that it would be physically impossible to put a ladycrown on her head, or something. The would-be-queen, Andy Moreno, in fact seriously knows her stuff, and is now making her views known about this injustice. She’s pretty cool. In the meantime, the Student Non-Discrimination Act might actually get passed, and it includes gender identity!

Eww:

A 31-year-old woman in Ohio, US, pretended to be a 14-year-old boy, first online and then in person, to get a 16-year-old girl to have sex with her. That’s just gross, and it’s definitely the worst visibility for supposed lesbians this week.

Come out, come out wherever you are:

Ladies and gents, it is National Coming Out Day today. Let’s all be out and safe because we are able to and some aren’t, and remember, straight people are statistically way more likely to support our full and equal rights if they know one of our kind! So, in the name of equality, come out to someone today, and keep it queer, folks!
