The Week in Gay: where have all the gays gone? Mrs DeGeneres & why the Archbishop of Canterbury thinks it’s all okay really…

The Week in Gay. The Most Cake’s weekly round-up of lesbian-ish/gay lady/queer grrrl news from around the world…

There’s a pretty infographic in pink and blue, though:

An experimental survey by the ONS on sexual attraction says there are much fewer of us (1.5%) than previously thought. The general consensus is that they’re WRONG. First of all, in 2001 we were at 6%, so where did literally millions of gays go? Second of all, when’s the last time you told a complete stranger who showed up on your doorstep that you were a lez? We could also consider that a lot of kids who live at home may be closeted, that it’s highly unlikely the proportion of gay people who are religious or black is truthfully that much smaller than the proportion of straight people who are, etc. The point is, WRONG.

It Gets Better, It Gets Awesome:

Dan Savage wants kids in high schools around the world who are being bullied because they’re gay to know that there’s a beautiful life waiting for them at the end of it all. Like many others, he was upset about the recent spate of bullying-related suicides in teenagers across the United States, and he’s launched the It Gets Better Project, which has its own YouTube channel where people can upload videos to give queer youngsters hope. Fairy Cake and I have already uploaded vids, throw your hat in the ring y’all!

Gay bishops:

Archbishop Rowan Williams says clergy in the CoE can be gay as long as they’re celibate.

DADT Fail:

Oh, America. Land of the free, home of the brave, except if you’re gay in which case you are not free to show us how brave you are. On Tuesday, the Senate voted to not even debate the Defense Authorization Act, which included language to affect the end of the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell ban on openly gay soldiers. Devil’s Food Cake has already broken the policy down for you, including this week’s silver lining. The gay blogosphere has been all OVER this, and everyone’s mega disappointed.

Shamelessness:

The same Russian gay activist we spoke about last week held his protest outside the Moscow mayor’s office, and police broke it up with eight arrests.

Why don’t we just call it ‘marriage’ for everyone?

The Lib Dems want you to get married-married rather than gay-married/CP’ed. Does anyone want to discuss this? Are civil partnerships, all the rights and privileges but not the word, just as good as or even superior to marriage? Or should we want nominal sameness as well as legal equality with the straights?

LGBT parenting:

The United State of Florida, the only state with an explicit ban on gay adoption, is going to stop enforcing the ban immediately, following a court ruling that says it’s unconstitutional and we’re great parents so what’s the problem. Governor Charlie Crist apparently isn’t even going to bother appealing the ruling, which is the result of a 2008 case brought by a gay couple who have fostered two young brothers for nearly six years but have been, until now, unable to adopt them. You should read some of the court documents on that case, they’re heart-wrenching.

Joe.My.God.:

Someone posted the F-word and a death threat on Joe Jarvis’s blog from a computer in a U.S. Senator’s offices in Atlanta, Georgia. What is up with the world.

Mrs and Mrs DeGeneres:

Portia de Rossi is now Portia Lee James DeGeneres. w00t!
