When Pigs Fly…
I’m generally the kind of person that believes you can’t really teach an old dog new tricks. Let’s be honest – some people just aren’t ever going to change their minds, and no matter how much I shout and scream and march and protest and argue, that won’t happen. I’m pretty sure I could float off the ground and have the light of a thousand suns shining out of my mouth, there will still be people who disagree.
Obviously, I’m okay with that. There’s nothing wrong with dissenting opinion and I firmly believe in freedom of speech. Every once in a while, though, something happens that reaffirms my belief in the ability of campaigning, of standing up and speaking out, to change the hearts and minds of the most surprising people.
This article in the Guardian today was one of those things. For those of you who don’t know (!) John McCain was the Republican candidate in the US presidential elections last year – he eventually lost out to Barack Obama. John McCain may have done a lot of stupid things (I’m looking at you, Sarah Palin) but he clearly made a wonderful choice of wife, and a pretty darn good job raising his daughter.
I guess no matter what you believe in, where you come from or what your politics are, sometimes there are things that are so clearly right or wrong that you can’t help but make the right choice. The NOH8 Campaign is a grassroots photographic campaign, in which Californian residents campaigning against Proposition 8 took portraits of themselves with the campaign logo. It has slowly gained popularity, and now boasts a series of actors, singers and politicians who have lent their names and faces to the campaign. Other celebrities that have been involved in the campaign include Elizabeth Keener and Kathy Griffin.
What do you think of the NOH8 campaign? And the McCains’ support?
