The Week In Gay: This year’s Emmys, suicidal gay teens and saying ‘I do’ in Mexic City
by Cupcake
Introducing The Most Cake’s weekly round-up of lesbian-ish/gay lady/queer grrrl news from around the world…
Mexico City wants you to get gay married and go gay honeymooning there! The province recently legalised same-sex marriage and now wants to tap into the gay tourism industry. For publicity, Argentina’s first wed gay couple is going on an all-expenses-paid holiday! Maybe when the UK achieves true marriage equality, Mexico will do the same for some pale lezzie Brits. It could be you!
Foreign Secretary William Hague might be gay, and in this day and age that’s still a pretty damaging rumour, what’s up with that? He shared a room with a boy employee, and in response to internet speculation, issued a statement saying a lot of personal stuff that is definitely nobody’s business and has nothing to do with his job and makes me think “why does he feel like he has to disclose so much unrelated stuff?” Discuss.
Being gay in Baghdad: Gay City News correspondent Michael Luongo has filed a four-part report on how gay life in Iraq has changed, for better or for worse, over the past three years. This is really interesting, because the welfare of marginalized minorities tends to plummet in crisis-stricken areas, and Iraq is still pretty crisis-stricken.
LGBT youth: Despite seeing three suicides in the past year related to anti-gay bullying, a school district in Minnesota is sticking to their homophobic guns and blocking bullying prevention efforts by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN). A parents’ coalition is backing up the board of education, claiming that LGBT bullying policies would infringe on Christian parents’ and children’s right to express their traditional family values. (Gay kids don’t come from families with values, right?) Focus on the Family would prefer that we just don’t talk about the problem lest teachers and parents actually give the impression that it’s ok to be gay. Box Turtle Bulletin asks, “when does opposition to suicide prevention equal murder?”
Antipodean progress: Tasmania recognises same-sex unions, incl. marriages, from other countries and New South Wales says we can adopt kids! Also, New Zealand has denied charity status to an ex-gay group: Maybe you’ve heard of Exodus International and their cray-cray claims to be able to make you straight with a cocktail of equal parts Jesus, self-hatred, and repression. The Kiwis denied the group the legal status of a registered charity, pointing out that since the Geigh is not a mental disorder, Exodus serves no “public benefit”. (via Joe.My.God.)
Emmys: The Primetime Emmys happened, and they were really really gay! Jane Lynch won an Emmy for playing Sue Sylvester in Glee. Here’s her speech:
