Waiting for Miss G

A quick browse through Friday’s copy of the Metro on my way to work led to the delightful discovery that Eva Green will soon be gracing our screens in a sapphic boarding school themed flick directed by Jordan Scott (daughter of Ridley) entitled ‘Cracks’.

Some further digging revealed that the film is based on the 1999 book by the same name, penned by Sheila Kohler.  A short piece in the August issue of Vanity Fair on the film describes it as follows:

“Set at an all girl boarding school in interwar England, the film centers on a clique of students on the swim team.  Eva Green stars as their provocative and charismatic coach and teacher, Miss G, who encourages a sapphic ‘crack’ – a crush, that is – held by one of her pupils, played by Juno Temple.  “She’s not afraid of exploring the darkness”, says Scott of Green, “whilst managing to keep a perfect balance of light sensitivity and tragedy”.  (Everything you want in a teacher, isn’t it?)

Hormones rage and obsessions spin out of control when a beautiful and mysterious new student arrives, inspiring jealousy and umbrage, which lead – perhaps – to her inexplicable disappearance.  Audiences have always loved a good boarding school thriller, and they won’t be disappointed with Cracks – think The Children’s Hour meets Lord of the Flies.”

If that doesn’t whet your appetite, these publicity shots for the film featuring the lovely Ms Green certainly should:

Now why didn’t any of my teachers look like that?  Consider me ‘cracked’.  Also, I have it on good authority that the ‘beautiful and mysterious new student’ that catches Miss G’s eye is Spanish.  As if you needed another reason to watch it.

The film is set to premier at the 2009 Toronto Film Festival, which opens on 10 September.  According to imdb the release date in France is 30 December 2009.  I haven’t managed to locate a UK release date.  If anyone has that information, do let us know!  Otherwise, the Cakettes may be taking an impromptu trip to Paris this winter.

Ok, one more gratuitous Eva pic just because:

I’m just writing a post on this too – I’ve seen the film and it’s really good! The girl playing Fiamma, the object of Miss G’s affections is gorgeous (although not as beautiful as Eva Green, obvs) and it’s all just great to look at – costumes, sets, etc.
