The Most Cake’s weekly round-up of lesbian-ish/gay lady/queer grrrl news from around the world.
Something momentous happened today. After a really long, really hard slog, New York senators voted 33-29 to legalise gay marriage in New York state. Of these, 4 of the senators were Republican, which has already prompted the anti-gay National Organisation for Marriage to pledge $2 million to having these senators defeated at elections in 2012. … Continue Reading
Just a newsy snippet, but: good news from the world of gay marriage! And what a happy world that must be for the select few who populate it. The Saskatchewan Court of Appeals has ruled that government-appointed officials may not opt out of performing same-sex marriages, saying that to do so “would violate the equality rights of gay and lesbian individuals”. The Court further noted that marriage commissioners are appointed to perform non-religious ceremonies by the government, and that they are often the only option for gay couples wishing to get married. … Continue Reading
Half of me thinks this video is amazing, and the other half is so uncomfortable with the sight of children swearing. Just to warn you, before you click play, this video is seriously, seriously NSFW. Or parents. Or, IMO, children.

A straight friend once asked me why gay people needed “gay marriage” in places where they already had had civil ceremonies. The UK for example, or the US state of Massachusetts where my friend comes from.
“You’ve got all the legal rights” she said – “so what’s the difference? … Continue Reading
Given the not-so-subtle erosion of anti-discrimination legislation aimed at protecting gay people over the past few months, I can’t say that I’ve set my hopes very high for the outcome of many court cases in this area. It was more than a pleasant surprise, then, to read this article about the legal appeal of a marriage counsellor sacked for refusing to counsel a gay couple who had come to him for advice. … Continue Reading

There are many viable and legitimate reasons to love Jane Lynch. For me, most of them now revolve around eight or so perfectly delivered lines of scathing dialogue every Monday night from nine on E4. For others, perhaps a willingness to speak candidly about her personal life despite Hollywood pressure to keep schtum (and straight) does the trick. And for some latecomers to Lynch-ville, maybe it’s just because she verbally kicked Obama’s gay-marriage-ban-allowing ass a few weeks ago … Continue Reading
I’m generally the kind of person that believes you can’t really teach an old dog new tricks. Let’s be honest – some people just aren’t ever going to change their minds, and no matter how much I shout and scream and march and protest and argue, that won’t happen. I’m pretty sure I could float off the ground and have the light of a thousand suns shining out of my mouth, there will still be people who disagree. … Continue Reading
I consider myself a non-sentimental person. I don’t get swayed too easily by emotion and I’m not the sort that cries when I see a kitten (though I do love puppies). But certain things – and there’s no other way to say it – really move me. And one of those is definitely weddings. … Continue Reading

A religious group has just gone further than the UK government in giving gay people human rights.
The Quakers – a Christian church known for their pacifism, egalitarianism, porridge oats and being the people who sailed from England on the Mayflower to start the USA – are on the verge of sanctioning gay marriage. … Continue Reading
