If you’ve got a spare minute today and have the ability to get up to Bloomsbury, pay a visit to everyone’s favourite (only) gay bookshop. In the course of last night, and possibly because of the riots that have been taking place over the last couple of days, Gay’s The Word’s shop window was egged and smashed in. … Continue Reading

I don’t know if MostCake readers would think this or say it – but even if not – you’ve probably heard it. Something along the lines of: “being gay doesn’t define me – it’s just who I have sex with.”
I’ve heard it quite a few times. I kind of understand it. But though I could never quite put my finger on why, something about it always sounded a bit wrong to me.

A poll carried out by the Orange County Equality Project has named Britney Spears the greatest gay icon of all time (OF ALL TIME). Spears beat out Madonna and Lady Gaga – second and third respectively – to top the poll, in which 1000 gay men all over Southern California were asked to who they considered the greatest gay icon. Forgive me for pointing out the obvious, but THEY’RE NOT EVEN GAY. … Continue Reading
In the first ever prosecution of its kind, two men are to be prosecuted for incitement to hatred on the basis of sexual orientation. The two men were caught handing out leaflets outside a mosque in Derby in July 2010, which were headed “The Death Penalty?”. According to a report from The Guardian, the leaflet called for the execution of gay people, and was slipped through letterboxes in the area that same month. … Continue Reading
Those of you who keep your eyes peeled for gay news (or just search ‘gay’ on the Guardian website) may have noticed an interesting opinion piece by filmmaker Parvez Sharma, best known for his film ‘A Jihad for Love’, which centers on gay Muslims around the world. … Continue Reading
In a report that both terrifies me and makes me sick to my stomach, a 5 Live Investigation has delved into the rarely considered, but surprisingly prevalent, problem of forced marriages. In an in-depth interview, a young lesbian woman of Middle Eastern origin describes the ordeal she suffered when she came out to her parents – the repeated attempted marriages, the rampant violence and the parental encouragement to commit suicide. … Continue Reading
Half of me thinks this video is amazing, and the other half is so uncomfortable with the sight of children swearing. Just to warn you, before you click play, this video is seriously, seriously NSFW. Or parents. Or, IMO, children.
Just a quick one on new developments in American law – a judgment handed down this week has ruled that a lesbian nurse discharged from the American Air Force must be reinstated to her post. Margaret Witt was discharged from the air force in 2006, when the husband of a woman with whom she was having an affair outed her to her superiors. However, in a landmark ruling, Judge Ronald B. Leighton held that: … Continue Reading

A straight friend once asked me why gay people needed “gay marriage” in places where they already had had civil ceremonies. The UK for example, or the US state of Massachusetts where my friend comes from.
“You’ve got all the legal rights” she said – “so what’s the difference? … Continue Reading
It’s hard to believe that gay people in the UK have come such a long way. Not everyone can claim the rights that we have right now: the right to civil partnerships, the right to our partners’ pensions, inheritance rights and so on. It was only two years ago that France was forced to discard discriminatory practices with relation to same-sex adoption. And members of our community in the US are still fighting for the basic recognition of their rights. Knowing that our biggest threat is Theresa May is scary, but we can at least sleep at night knowing that we won’t be dragged out of our homes, tossed in front of a show-trial court and imprisoned – or worse – for the crime of loving someone. … Continue Reading
