Friday Fancy Redux: Ivan E Coyote

by Devil’s Food Cake

OHMYGODYOUGUYS I haven’t been this excited since I found out Lip Service was ending. Ivan E Coyote – you know, I wrote about her before – has her very own, brand new column. You know what this means, right? A regular fix of the kind of writing that makes me tangle my hair around my fingers and sigh (I KNOW I KNOW, how emodramatic is that? BUT IT’S TRUE). … Continue Reading

LGB portrayal in the media: BBC research unveiled

by Devil’s Food Cake

The BBC today released the results of a mammoth research project focused on the portrayal of lesbian, gay and bisexual people in broadcast media. In what is the largest study ever undertaken by the BBC into LGB portrayal of this kind, over 2,000 people, gay and straight, were involved in in-depth interviews and focus groups, and more than 9,000 people responded to online surveys, the aim being to understand better the reactions of audiences to LGB portrayal in the media and use these results to better LGB representation. … Continue Reading

Pride and the pink pound: is corporate sponsorship of pride a bad thing?

by Devil’s Food Cake

Logging onto my facebook after two weeks of stalking-less bliss, I was eager to see what my friends had been up to. Since the weekend past was the gay pilgrimage that is Brighton Pride, I rolled through the obligatory photo ops, the (let’s be honest) prurient patrons and the myriad rainbow umbrellas that are Pride staples, and then came to a rather interesting post about the commercialization of pride, which questioned whether commercial sponsors are desirable or, to be more frank, necessary at such events. … Continue Reading

Music Video Monday… California Gurls

by Devil’s Food Cake

It’s widely accepted that, when it comes to most things, the original is the best. Fame, The Karate Kid, Whatever Happened To Baby Jane? – though copies and subsequent versions have been made of many things, the originals often are, in fact, the best.

Not always though. … Continue Reading

Music Video Monday… Kele Okereke – Tenderoni

by Devil’s Food Cake

For those of you who didn’t know, the former lead singer of Bloc Party, Kele Okereke, recently came out and has begun talking more about his sexuality. There’s a lot of talk about celebrities coming out recently, from Gaga to Lady Sovereign to that American country singer, … Continue Reading

Tuesday Top Ten… reasons I would never hang up on Lady Gaga.

by Devil’s Food Cake

Say what you want about Lady Gaga – and many, many people have – but there’s something intoxicating about her. I remember the first time I heard of her, when she performed Just Dance at the NewNowNext Awards, way back when in 2008. I was hooked – I played and replayed that performance as loud as my speakers would allow, and I’m pretty sure I drove all my flatmates crazy. Oh Lady Gaga. How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. … Continue Reading

TTT Special: Eurovision Edition

by Devil’s Food Cake

So Eurovision is over for the year – it’s time to pack away our score sheets, our voting fingers and our EU cupcakes. But though this year’s contestants are gone, they are certainly not forgotten, though admittedly some of them would be better left as such. As I look back on the wreckage of last evening, I feel like now’s a good time to recount the more memorable moments of Eurovisions past. And so, in lieu of this past week’s Tuesday top Ten, we have a Sunday countdown of some of the Cakette’s favourite Eurovision entries. … Continue Reading

News in brief vol. 1

by Devil’s Food Cake

I understand that lesbians are interesting and all, but I’m not sure I understand entirely the attraction we present to people outside our community. Over the time this website has been live, we’ve dealt with a number of ridiculous news items that focus mainly on the salacious assumptions people have about lesbians and then descend into… well, not much else. … Continue Reading

And today in gay news…

by Devil’s Food Cake

Given the not-so-subtle erosion of anti-discrimination legislation aimed at protecting gay people over the past few months, I can’t say that I’ve set my hopes very high for the outcome of many court cases in this area. It was more than a pleasant surprise, then, to read this article about the legal appeal of a marriage counsellor sacked for refusing to counsel a gay couple who had come to him for advice. … Continue Reading

Eating chicken turns you gay (and other really dumb stuff)

by Florentine

Nestled somewhere in between the wall-to-wall media circus of stranded air passengers and David Cameron’s face this week, you may have found yourself down-wind not of a volcanic ash cloud but, rather, of a bizarre claim made by the president (no less) of Bolivia; a man with more hair on his head than a toupee-wearing gorilla. … Continue Reading

When Pigs Fly…

by Devil’s Food Cake

I’m generally the kind of person that believes you can’t really teach an old dog new tricks. Let’s be honest – some people just aren’t ever going to change their minds, and no matter how much I shout and scream and march and protest and argue, that won’t happen. I’m pretty sure I could float off the ground and have the light of a thousand suns shining out of my mouth, there will still be people who disagree. … Continue Reading

Girls on film: ITV kick-starts a gay 2010

by Florentine

Those of you who spent Thursday night knee-deep in bar queues wearing questionable fancy dress and too inebriated to see who you were swapping saliva with at the stroke of midnight, may have missed ITV’s latest toe-dip into the land of lesbianism.  For this New Year’s Eve saw Joanna Briscoe’s erotic thriller Sleep with Me adapted for the channel by formidable screenwriting talent Andrew Davies, in nothing less than their prime time slot.  Yups.  Described as an “erotic thriller” in which “Adrian Lester (Hustle) and Jodhi May (Tipping the Velvet) … Continue Reading
