Happy Birthday to ME

One year ago, a baked goods site was born. Unlike Jesus, this did not occur in a manger, nor were we born into a top of the range Scientology-blessed crib like little Suri. No, it was into t’interweb.  A place littered with porn, viagra deals and more teen tumblr lez-obsessing sites than its little blinking eyes could believe.

Anyway, some of us cakes thought we’d bring you our best memories so far. There’s still more to come – after all, Jordan can push out a million biographies, and her life has also got at least another 10 books’ worth of experiences ahead of it.

So This Is Your Life little tmc – and you can’t even walk yet!

Lemon Tart:

Aside from dental dam gate, which will provide with enough humour to get me through the majority of my bed-pan-tethered 80s and 90s, it was just being near Beth Ditto… Could. not. breathe.

Florentine:

TMC, like Brad Pitts’ beard, has really escalated these past 12 months.  And besides the constant stream of behind-the-scenes debate and japes that are now as essential to my inbox as inappropriate Keira Knightley pics are to my desktop (props to Kevin for e-mail/s of the year), I think my personal award for stand-out moment goes to approximately 11.55pm on March 6^th 2010 – standing amidst our packed-out Art Party and, a bit like how God *snapped his fingers gangsta’ style when he made Earth, marvelling at what ‘a random conversation in a coffee shop this one time’ (to give it it’s technical term) had created.  Which, it turned out by 3am, were a couple of odds with piñatas on their heads.  Standard.

*God probably didn’t do this.

Fairy Cake:

Gush warning.  My favourite TMC-related moment was actually seemingly innocuous; sitting wide-eyed and newly-initiated at a table in Maos, Old Compton Street, surrounded by the core girlies stuffing their faces veggie style before MEN’s Madam JoJo extravaganza.  The conversation hopped effortless and animated from the increasing-acceptability of BNP-style racism to JD Samson to fried aubergines to the cakes that Lemon Tart had iced earlier that day in her cake-decorating class.  It was exhilarating to find a bunch of ladies who were so excited about their work, and I was so hungry to be a part of it all.  That hunger really hasn’t faded since.  Which is awesome.  Yes it is.

Oh, and Cunt-gate.  That was a riot.

Devil’s Food Cake:

My own personal favourite TMC moment was reading the first comment left on the site by someone who wasn’t a Cakette – a comment that was, funnily enough, on the very first article I wrote. It was a revelation to me that this thing we’d started, our little baby, was really born, really out there, and that someone that wasn’t one of us was sitting up and paying attention. Not just a thrill, this, no – I would call it more an affirmation.

We’ve come a long, long way together/through the hard times and the good…
